Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie MSP has urged Alex Salmond once and for all to drop his proposals for a multi-option referendum question.

Willie Rennie MSPWillie Rennie MSPHis calls come after Dr Matt Qvortrup told the First Minister that his plans for a multi-option referendum on Scottish independence risks causing lasting division and disagreement in the country. He said in his article 'one does not need to be an existentialist to feel a sense of anxiety about a multi choice referendum.'

Dr Qvortrup, considered by the First Minister as the "world's foremost expert on constitutional referendum," says that multi-option referendums 'are rarely a good idea and do not work for a vote on independence'.

Commenting, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie said:

"Dr Qvortrup's intervention backs up what I have been saying for weeks. The First Minister plans for a multi-option referendum as they stand will cause nothing but chaos and confusion.

"Given that this is the biggest political decision to be made in a generation, the question needs to be clear, decisive and fair.

"The First Minister should now drop his plans for multi option referendum. He misrepresented Dr Qvortrup before, now he should listen to him.

"Instead of spending all his time trying to rig the referendum, the First Minister needs to answer the many significant questions on the cost of splitting Scotland from the UK family. So far we have seen nothing but dodge and delay."
