International education report highlights Scotland’s overworked teachers

Commenting on the new OECD report Education at a Glance which confirms that Scotland's teachers work some of the longest hours in the world, Scottish Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Beatrice Wishart MSP said:

"When teachers are spending so much of their time in front of the class, they do not have time for marking, lesson prep or the personal development that helps them to continue improving as teachers. Teachers want to be at their best but this doesn't help.

"This isn't a workable or sustainable way to operate. Children will fall through the cracks if we continue to overwork our teachers this way.

"Scottish Liberal Democrats are committed to an independent review of teacher's working conditions and the demands on their time to ensure that we have the right balance of teaching and other commitments to allow our schools to thrive."
